Paperback has arrived!

Hold My Heart has been out less than a month, and so far is doing great! Reviews are starting to come in via Amazon and Goodreads; so far my book was well received. It debuted in the top 100 time-travel books, and stayed steady at the top 50K frequently. I’m told that’s great (this is all new for me) so yeay! I’m glad readers are enjoying it.

About HOLD MY HEART:

On a manhunt for a serial killer, FBI Special Agent Ileana Harper falls through a break in time, ripping her from the present and everything she knows. After forming an uneasy alliance with the man who comes to her rescue, she unearths long-buried family secrets. Spiraling out of control, she clings to memories of Tommy, her partner and best friend of eight years, to keep her sane, fearful she may never see him again.

FBI Special Agent Tommy Colton relies on Ileana to keep him grounded; she’s the closest thing he’s ever had to love in his life. When Ileana disappears, leaving no trace, he falls apart. Without her beside him, Tommy is about to face the biggest challenge of his career, if not his life.

While trying to find a way home, Ileana races to determine the killer’s identity and discovers he might be closer than she realized.

Will she risk everything to catch him, or sacrifice justice to find her way back to Tommy before it’s too late?

Yup, that’s right. It means that I’ll have to push the release back one last time a week or so. As soon as my work is done, then it’s off to the proofreader, and I’ll be sending ARC copies to all those amazing bloggers who signed up.

Amaze-balls. Incredible.

tumblr_inline_mmw9ncSyWQ1qz4rgp

She has done an awesome job getting deep into the story, and pushing me to really examine my work; and I love her for that. I really lucked out finding someone who gets my characters, understands what they’re about, and truly cares that my book is the best that it can be.Thank you Lea, you are a goddess among us women. ❤tumblr_inline_mmw9oaZ4Ne1qz4rgp

Will I survive? Heck, I truly hope so. Thank you everyone for your support and patience! I’m so blessed and grateful!

Almost Here: HOLD MY HEART (coming November 18, 2014)

Well, the Betas have spoken, and final tweaking is done.

As most of you know, I’ve been working on this book for years. With each step, the academia researcher in me painstakingly examined, fact-checked, and reviewed countless sources for content. When it came time to choose an Editor, I did the same. I requested multiple samples from some amazing editors out there. Compared and contrasted. Weighed my options.

It wasn’t easy to choose just one, but at the end, I’m very happy with my choice. Thank you to all those editors out there who work hard everyday, making author’s writing all the better.

Now, it is at the hands of my editor.

cd27c-tumblr_n13mponhcz1sxgrboo1_400

I’m extremely happy with the changes taking place. I can’t wait to share Ileana and Tommy’s journey with all of you. I hope to stir emotions in each and every one of you, albeit good or bad ones. Light a fire inside of you: passion, anger, sadness, laughter…something. As long as I entice emotions within you, I’ve succeeded as a writer.

As an avid reader, I know what it’s like to carry a book inside of you for days after you’re done reading it. Mulling it over your head, the characters still haunting you well after you’ve finished their journey on the page. THAT is what I aspire to do as a writer.

Once editing is done, on to formatting, then publishing. Make sure to sign up for updates and check this blog, my Facebook page, twitter, for the latest.

Bloggers: I will be distributing a limited number of ARC copies for reviews. If you’re interested, sign up:

Thank you All!

What I’ve learned so far

Well, Hold My Heart is finally at the hands of the betas.

Almost three years of blood, sweat and tears. Do I think it’s ready? Hell no. In my eyes, it will never be ready; but I can’t keep messing with it anymore.

This morning while working out, I listened to a book titled Stein on Writing by Sol Stein. As an Educator by trade, I can’t help it; I’m always looking for ways to learn, grow, and improve myself. Listening to this book made me think about what I’m trying to accomplish by entering the world of writing at this stage of my life.

As an avid reader, I’d say I’ve read hundreds of books. Do I remember each and every one? Absolutely not. But now and again, I run into a book  that grabs me and doesn’t let me go. So I’ve realized something: it’s not how good or bad a book is, but whether the book stirs emotions in me.

So, is a book horrible? What makes it horrible? As a communicator, I’m well aware that meaning lies in the receiver (in this case the reader),  not the sender (the author).

tumblr_inline_mxu867cptK1s45ujt

So, ladies and gents, I’ll be eating crow because all this time I was reading a book that stirred negative emotions in me I thought of it as a bad book. Instead, I’m the dummy. I  should have realized that is a sign of a good writer. Because whether I liked it or not, the book made me hate; made me angry; made me want to hurl the ipad across the room. And that, is an example of what a successful writer is. Conveying emotions within the reader. Whether they’re pleasant or unpleasant emotions. Having said that, there are truly bad books out there – full of bad grammar, faulty reasoning, poor story-telling. Hopefully my book won’t fall into that category.

So what have I learned so far? I can’t please everyone. I can only try to convey my characters’ emotions through words to the best of my ability, in order to stir emotion within the reader. Most importantly, I have to stay true to myself and my characters. Am I ready for reviews to come? Hell No. Like students reviews, I’ll take them personally.

tumblr_moex4ugcIH1ry4q0lo1_500

One thing I know for sure right now. Once my book is out, I hope to stir emotions through my writing. Whether those emotions are intense love for it, or intense hate, that will let me know I’ve done my job as a writer.

Calling Seasoned Authors: Is this normal??

Okay, so progress:
Cover:
The amazingly talented Regina from Mae I Design is working on the cover — which I must say, It ROCKS!!! I’m really excited for you guys to see it as I get closer to the publishing date — so I’ll sit on that for a bit.

Writing:
The humanity! I’m doing camp NaNoWriMo as a way of forcing myself to work on book 2; but these characters!!

Okay, authors: is this normal?
They’re like real people living inside my head, and pop-up at the most inopportune times, throwing me curve balls, and boom! something happens and I go ‘holy shit!’ seriously?! But I feel like I’m just documenting their story, it’s not like I can tell them what to do or put words in their mouth…right?

Please tell me that’s all part of the writing process and it’s not like I’m losing my mind or anything..
I think it’s important to document their story as it unfolds, before I rush to publish book one. That way, I can ensure continuity. Sometimes I just see the scene play out, and have to rush to grab something to write, even my phone at times, to get the scene down before it poofs out of my brain.
Please authors, tell me it’s normal to get upset at your characters, to hate them a little bit, and get mad they show up whenever they feel like it, or don’t talk when I finally make time to write — that I’m not losing my mind….

I digress.
So while working on book 2, some things have come to pass — those Holy Hell! moments that are making have to go back to book 1 and make sure I didn’t paint myself into a corner because I didn’t have that information at the time and they waited to lay it on me now, so while I’m sitting here thinking everything is great, book is ready for editor, BOOM! They go “btw, this and that!” and I’m like, seriously…WHAT? I thought I was done with the plot people.

Let’s add to that the stuff I’ve learned during my creating fiction class at The Loft. Setting, pace, dialog…and here I thought my book was awesome, soooo ready for the editor! Nope. I need to make sure I describe what things smell like, feel like, look like. Things that as a reader, I take for granted. Things that pull me in, and bring me into the story. I need to do that for my readers. Of course, these are not things we think about in real life. It’s not like we walk around going “I’m sitting in the living room, the smell of my son’s recent fart lingering in the air– must be taco day at school today.” So I have to go back, revise, and revise, and read..

So back to revisions, and writing book 2 to find out what’s going to happen with Ileana and Tommy, and Jamie, and Nelson and Chris, and Adams – yes, new characters are showing up. I just have to remind myself that this is all part of the process, and the most important thing is that I put a book out there well written, well edited, and that it speaks to the reader – like so many books speak to me.
So back to work — and of course, LENT. Yes, lent…guess what I gave up for lent?

Yup. Inspiration must be found elsewhere…until next time! ❤

Revisions that won’t end…

Okay, So the journey Continues! So far I’ve done some re-writes, edited for filters and repeated words, and thanks to my awesome Betas –Courtney Houston, Gloria Soto, Debbie Robinson, and Candice Thomas-Maddox I’ve managed to correct some plot holes, flow and other details. You guys are awesome!

So Debbie Robinson finished copy-editing for me, making my grammar more, eh, grammatical, then after that: Off to the editor!!!

List has been narrowed down a bit, so let’s just hope I can afford – and survive the process! 🙂
As far as further writing: I’m talking an online Class at The Loft, https://www.loft.org/ and I’m learning a lot. To me, there’s a big difference between having a story to tell, to being a storyteller. For those who know me, you know I want to be the best writer I can be – which means learning. Good thing I love to learn.

Writing lately? well…

Yeah… I’m blaming the weather.

Book 2 is in the works, as well as the novella for Brad Nelson and Christina Reyes, which I’m flexing my 3rd person writing muscles. Well, wish me luck! Thanks so much for being so supportive guys; my Facebook page is up to 80 plus likes, which means I’ll have to post another teaser soon!

Noooo pressure…
Until next time!

Here we GO!!!!!

Welcome to my author blog! Hopefully you will join me in this journey.

My book, Hold My Heart, is finished. Now the real work begins… So far I’ve got Mae I design working on my cover — which by the way, she’s a genius! just check out her work at  https://www.facebook.com/MaeIDesignandPhotography

Next stop, I’m doing revisions; finding plot holes, checking for accuracy of time line, and I got the best proofreader ever going over my book, Debbie Robinson. 🙂 First stop of my journey was to start a Facebook page:
 https://www.facebook.com/esthermsotoauthor
Release : Summer 2014
Genre: Romantic Suspense, time travel, love, Hottie Mc Hotters, strong smart women, awesomeness….

That wasn’t bad. Releasing a teaser however…

So, I did…and the response was …amazing! So thank you all, for being so absolutely supportive, especially those authors that I admire and respect so much (cough! Laura Kaye, Amy A. Bartol) So what’s next?

Right now I’m working on book 2 – yes, even though Hold my Heart could be a standalone, too much is happening to Ileana Harper to cram into one book. I’m also working on a novella to go along with Book one (Ileana’s best friend Christina Reyes)
Up next:
Editor search is on!!

This is something completely out of my comfort zone.  I’m a huge reader, and a communication studies Instructor. I’ve been told by countless people, “you should write a book!”, well guess what? I did. For those who know me, you know what a perfectionist I am; I need to be the best I can be, so having others read my creation is…but what the hell. You only live once.

Coming up there will be the cover reveal, blurb, and giveaways, and, did I say, giveaways?

So here we go. Stay tuned for more teasers, and updates on how I slowly turn from a somewhat semi-normal person, to a total looney bin of a writer (hopefully).

And especially, those friends coming along with me on this crazy ride: Debbie Robinson and Courtney Houston btw – check out her author page!

Here we go!!!!!
